I lived in HK in 2014-2015. Below is a brief guide of places I enjoyed going to. My favorite things are marked with a 馃挋. I鈥檝e also pined a few of the locations on a Google Maps:
Get around
The MTR (Metro) is good cheap and reliable to get around, in HK island you can also take the tram. Pick a neighbourhood and walk around, its a nice city to get lost in. After going out I always used to take Uber or Taxi because the MTR was closed. But overall HK is a very safe city.
Take the star ferry: A charming, cheap, and traditional way to see Victoria Harbour. It takes you from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon and back.
Areas / Places to see
- Victoria Peak: Take the cable car up. Nice views of the city. You can also walk up or down for a nice workout.
- Mong Kok: Full Chinese street markets. Good for shopping Chinese stuff. Ladies Market good for shopping (like aliexpress in real life)
- Causeway Bay: Nice neighbourhood to walk around
- Lions Rock (Hike) 馃挋: Mountain hike to the top through a really good trail incredible views of the whole city. Go at Sunset
- Tai Wan Beach (Hike) 馃挋: Nice and remote pristine beach, it鈥檚 a long hike but worth it, we camped on the beach many weekends there with friends. You can surf there too depending on the season.
- Happy Valley Racecourse 馃挋: I went most Wednesday evenings there. Super good atmosphere, expats and students drinking and betting on the horses - go there for a good time.
- Wan Chai: Many bars and restaurants to go out. Go in the evening.
- Lan Kwai Fong (LKF): Party street with clubs and bars. Oma is a good techno club there
Restaurants:
- One Dim Sum 馃挋: Michelin star restaurant, really cheap. Amazing Dim sums. It鈥檚 in Prince Edward
- Din Tai Fung: Taiwanese dumplings restaurant in Causeway bay
Bars / Clubs
- Oma: Techno club in LKF
- There are many cool rooftop bars to have drinks in with amazing terraces and views of the HK skyline in HK island. Can鈥檛 remember the name of one exactly but if you can go to a rooftop to have a drink.
As always take this with a pinch of salt and go get lost.
